The Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party
An alternative political party that challenged the power of the current democratic party which prevented African Americans from voting despite making up 40% of the state population.
August Freedom Vote: 🗳️
- They mobilised over 60,000 voters to cast ballots despite beatings, shootings, intimidations and arrests. Freedom Voters outnumbered regular democratic party voters in many counties.
The Nature of the movement:
Positive Impacts
- Achieved → increased voter enfranchisement and push for political representation however it was not super successful.
- formation of the freedom schools (grassroots support networks)
- proves how difficult it is to have comprehensive civil rights.
