Although the Nazi’s gained control of Germany, there remained groups who opposed the regime and resisted hitlers government. Youth groups, Churches, communists and the German military were all involved in opposing Nazi rule. → Although, they were unsuccessful...
Political Opposition
The Social Democratic Party → Socialists and Communists & trade unionists
- All non-Nazi political parties had been banned following the Enabling act of July 1933
However, the communist party continue to work against the Nazi regime by:
- committing acts of sabotage or spying
- Giving information to the USSR
- Distributing anit-Nazi material
- However, the prevalence of the Gestapo and Brown shirts led to the majority of this behaviour being revealed → prosecuted → Killed or concentration camped
- August Landmesser → was a Nazi but left after marrying a Jewish woman. He famously refused to give the Nazi salute at a workplace rally and was later arrested in 1936.
- communist deputies are banned, concentration camps
- Social democrats are censored (newspapers) + arrested + all intimidated
- some SDP members fled to neighbouring nations e.g Prague. They tried to setup an oppositional party outside the German body. → pathetic. all they did was encourage sabotage and rebellion within socialists in Germany
Workers
- trade unions abolished and consolidated into a single 'German Labour Front' that was controlled by the Nazi party as apart of the Volksgemeinschaft
- Some workers were communists and thus opposed through participating in strikes and protests against prices/the economic condition of Germany (starving)
Youth Groups
-
Youth culture rejected the Nazi ideology. The swing youth was resistance. This alligned with their interested in art (jazz music) which was being banned by the Nazi party.
-
The White Rose Group of young intellectuals who inherently disagreed with the ideology of the Nazi party and thus handed out flyers that went against the Nazi's
→ the Gestapo searched for them endlessly and when found, they were hung.
Churches
“a mad prophet with repulsive arrogance” - The Pope on Hilter
<aside>
📎 Was a sensitive tension that existed as many Christian Germans would oppose the Nazi party if they prosecuted the church. → Hitler was careful.
